Home Building & Design Intent for Lot 23 in Tetherow (Bend, Oregon)

Home Building & Design Intent for Lot 23 in Tetherow (Bend, Oregon)

When we decided to build a spec home on Lot 23 in Tetherow, we wanted a home design that would live well, incorporate sustainable and green building principles, and emphasize the lot’s beauty and unique features. We set out to build an Earth Advantage Certified, contemporary home – perfect for a family ready to ‘live the dream’ in Bend, Oregon.

Over the years, we’ve worked with many area architects and have great relationships with a variety of designers. Similar to the custom homes we build, we try to fit the project –the lot, structure, and aesthetic –with the right designer.  The Bend design firm, Christian Gladu Design (CGD) seemed best suited for this project.

While the plans are finialized and construction has begun, we still refer to the CGD’s initial Design Intent as we make surface and finish selections and encounter unexpected challenges:

Design Intent for Lot #23

Lot 23 faces west with views towards the Cascades Mountains. The house is sited to take advantage of the western views and maximize outdoor living areas. The interior of the home is organized around a central living core that visually connects the living, dining, and cooking areas while creating tertiary, exterior living spaces. The master bedroom is located to the north side of the property creating an interior layer of privacy for the suite. Second floor bedrooms and bath are organized around a family room with westerly views.

Treating the house as a collection of smaller connected buildings controls the overall building mass. The second story portion of the building is flanked by single story building elements visually layering the vertical presence of the house. The low roof pitches and overhangs create a delicate canopy, which casts a layer of shadows across the building facade while protecting the building from the elements.

The use of traditionally profiled materials creates texture and depth on the building façade while the banding trim reinforces the horizontal nature of the residence and its relationship to the landscape. The vocabulary of the details is influenced by the Central Oregon vernacular and is accented with the use of natural earth tone colors and indigenous materials.
