Decor Inspiration: Beautiful Open Shelving Ideas

Open shelving can be a beautiful way to display and store items almost anywhere in your home – making the space feel lighter and more open.  In the kitchen, frequently used pieces can be kept within hands-reach. In a study nook, shelves can help create a sense of calm, and in the laundry room they make everything easier to access. Here are few favorite examples from homes we’ve recently constructed.

1. Kitchen Curation

This kitchen has ample lower cupboard space and a generous walk-in pantry, leaving room for open timber shelving set against simple white subway tile.  The homeowners display a small sampling of favorite cookbooks, homemade canned-goods, drinking glasses, and a few carefully chosen accent pieces.

Tip: Don’t cram all of your treasures onto one shelf. Spacing your items will maintain the sense of openness you were hoping to create.

2. Happy Hour

Displaying a few of glasses and your favorite libation can take the place of a larger bar or sideboard.

3. A Sense of Calm

Open shelves in a study nook emphasize simplicity and calm in the space you’ve set aside for writing, reading, and collecting your thoughts.
